Television Shows with an Office Setting

A couple of months ago we put together a list of films whose character(s) work in a warehouse. We offer a variety of warehouse work at Breakaway so we wanted to shed light on excellent movies that shed light on the types of jobs we offer! Today we wanted to do another take on this concept and look at fantastic television shows that take place in an office environment.

We have many office positions available at Breakaway as well so we thought it might be fun to look at the television shows that use an office setting as part of their main story.

The Office

This show is a shoe in on this list. The entire show takes place in an office environment. The U.S version of the show (based on the UK version by the same name) follows the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin paper company and the day to day operations of the sales people, accountants, receptionist and manager as they try to sell paper.

Mad Men

The majority of this drama takes place in the offices of an advertising agency in the 1960s. The agency acts as a backdrop to the character’s lives and provides us access to the careers and personal lives of the copywriters, account managers, and their secretaries as they navigate the intriguing and creative world of New York advertising.

Parks and Recreation

This wonderful comedy takes place in the offices of the Parks and Recreation department of Pawnee, Indiana. The team, lead by Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) work to make Pawnee the best town in America by creating more parks/green areas, fixing up the town, and dealing with their wacky townspeople.

The West Wing

This drama by Aaron Sorkin takes place inside the most important office in the United States of America, the White House. This show centres around the White House staff during President Bartlet’s (Martin Sheen) time in office.

The Mindy Project

This comedy starring Mindy Kaling (also on The Office) revolves around a doctor’s office in New York City. The doctors are obstetricians and the show centres around the practice as well as their hilarious staff that assist them in their office.

There are a few offices at the centre of this drama from creator Shonda Rhimes. Olivia Pope is a political ‘fixer’ who runs her company, Pope and Associates, out of her office. Olivia and her team fix the problems of high power politicians in D.C and this often requires her to visit the most important office of all, the White House, to fix the problems of the staff and the president himself.

The Good Wife

This television show centres around the drama of a Chicago state’s attorney and his wife. The series begins with his wife, Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) returning to her job as an attorney with the prestigious law firm, Stern, Lockhart, Gardner. While this show explores the character’s lives inside and outside work, the centre of the drama revolves around their careers in the law office, the district attorney’s office, and the court room.

While most of these TV shows take place in a variety of settings, it is the office where they work that provides a common ground and the biggest source of entertainment. The office environment is one that comes in all different types but there is sense of camaraderie, humour, and drama that come along with the workplace which provides the viewers of these shows with endless entertainment.
