A couple of months ago we started a segment called “What Do I Need to Know About…” where we would post a topic of interest in order to clear up questions related to that topic. We started this segment with a post about the administrative work we offer and followed it up with a segment about safety footwear. Today we would like to continue this segment by focusing on forklift operator positions.
What Do I Need to Know About Breakaway’s Forklift Operator Positions
1. You must have a valid forklift licence
In order to be considered for a position in which you operate a forklift for any company you must have a valid forklift licence. There are a variety of fantastic forklift schools in the GTA where you can get your first licence or renew your expiring forklift licence. To be considered for a position as a forklift operator with Breakaway you must have a valid licence from a forklift school, you may not use an in-house licence from a previous company you have worked for.
2. The types of lifts you can operate will affect your pay rate
Forklift operators are in high demand. If you are able to operate more than one type of lift then you will fit into one of our companies looking for skilled individuals that can change machines based on the type of work that needs to be done. If you are interested in becoming certified on more than one lift take a look at one of our previous blog posts, the 5 Most Common Types of Forklifts. This can help to identify the most common types of forklifts in the industry and determine which forklifts you may want to become certified on. As an example, a Counterbalance operator could make $15-$16/hr while someone who has experience operating a Counterbalance, Reach, and Walkie could make $19-$20/hr depending on the company. No matter the type of lift you operate there are positions available for you, but the more experience you have on a variety of lifts will affect the rate of pay for each position.
3. Previous experience required
Experience is a large factor when applying for a forklift position. We have work available in warehouses and on cross docks and both require you to have previous verifiable experience in order to work for most of our clients. Specifically with the companies working in a cross dock facility, they require their forklift operators to be trained to work in a fast-paced environment and have verifiable experience proving they are able to load and unload freight quickly and efficiently.
If you have a forklift licence but don’t have experience don’t worry, we can still help. We do have clients willing to take new forklift operators occasionally. These positions will come up so keep your eye on our job postings page of our website. These types of positions are a great way to get into the transportation industry.
4. Afternoons and Midnights
If you are open to working afternoon or midnight shifts this is your ticket into you next job in the transportation and logistics industry. Most transport companies are busiest in the evening therefore the majority of the shifts are in the afternoon and at night. Day shifts are available occasionally but if you are open to working at night we have a large amount of positions available. And don’t worry, we can help with the transition to night shifts, check out our Tips for Working the Night Shift.
