Dos and Don’ts of Being Healthy At Work

People who work full-time spend a quarter of their week at work, which is why it’s important to maintain healthy habits while on the job. Here are some simple dos and don’ts of being healthy at work, so you can feel great and produce your best work for all 40 hours a week.

Dos and Don’ts of Being Healthy At Work

The Dos:

Do Stay Energized – Your energy at work will come from your habits before and throughout the workday. Exercising before work has proven to give people lasting energy during the day, but if you don’t want to get up even earlier, that’s okay! There are other ways to keep your energy levels high during the day. Drinking plenty of water and choosing nutritious foods at work can give you the energy you need to avoid crashing before your eight hours are up.  healthy at work

Do Stand Often – Long periods of sitting have been linked to serious health issues, such as cancer, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease. If you work at a desk, then try to get up as often as possible. You can take a walk around the office, go get coffee, or even try a standing desk to combat the negative effects of sitting too much.

Do Take Advantage of Wellness Benefits – Companies have gotten better and better in recent years at offering amazing wellness benefits to their employees because it’s a perk job seekers look for. Whether it’s a discounted gym membership, flexible working hours, or even on-site athletic or cooking classes… make sure to take advantage of these benefits! After all, these things were probably important to you when you were looking for a job and they are a great way to get healthy and stay content at your company.

Do Use Blue Light Glasses – Don’t underestimate the benefits of blue light glasses if you work at a computer. These lenses help block blue light and can stop you from feeling worn down because of its harmful effects. If you’ve ever gotten dry eyes or headaches after working at your computer for a few hours, give them a try and see if you feel the difference.

The Don’ts:

Don’t Eat Junk – It’s fine to treat yourself every so often, however, if your office is one that is stocked with donuts and cakes every day, be mindful of how often you’re eating them. Again, they are fine in moderation, but too much sugary food can make you feel lethargic, run-down, and can cause sickness – things you want to avoid when trying to stay healthy and be productive at work!

Don’t Be Dirty – A dirty, disorganized workspace will never allow you to work as efficiently as possible. Plus, if you never clean it, your desk can harbor germs and cause you to catch the office cold and miss tons of work. Keep your desk neat and clean by scheduling a time weekly to organize important papers, disinfect your keyboard, mouse, and other surfaces. secret-3650080_1280

Don’t Gossip – It can boost your mental health to make meaningful friendships at work and being happy at work is a huge part of being successful in your career. However, steer clear of the group that’s always gossiping and complaining because this can have the opposite effect, causing you to be unhappy and constantly feeling jealous of others and unworthy.

Don’t Deprive Yourself Of Sleep – Although this is technically outside of working hours, sleep is so important to feeling your best. Try to stick to a regular sleeping schedule by going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day. When you get enough hours of sleep at night, you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on your workload!
