In 2008 Malcolm Gladwell published a book entitled Outliers: The Story of Success. In this book he repeatedly mentions an idea known as the 10,000-hour rule. This rule states that in order to achieve world-class expertise in any given skill it is a matter of practising that skill correctly for 10,000 hours.
10,000 hours.
10,000 hours accounts for 1 year and 1 month of our lives. This means that it would take you a minimum of just over a year to achieve expert status in a skill and this is if you were working at that skill for 24 hours a day/7 days a week!
This is a long time to become an expert in a particular field. If you had a hobby, say knitting, and you would knit 2 hours a day every day of the week it would take you 13.7 years to become a world-class knitter, based on Mr. Gladwell’s theory. That is a lot of knitting!
Based on this rule, we at Breakaway decided to run our recruiting skills through the calculator and see what came out. Breakaway Staffing Solutions has been in business for 12 years. Accounting for 40 hours/ 5 days a week (though it is often many more hours) our owner and employees who have been with Breakaway from the beginning have reached 24,960 hours each.
24,960 hours.
Not only have they reached the 10,000 hours, they have doubled it and then some! Is there something higher than an expert? Because I think our employees might be it!
It is very exciting to see the dedication and hours put into our company and into finding careers for individuals in the community from our employees that care about what they do.
